Mental starters
 |
The 'starter' to a lesson remains an effective way of engaging children at the start of a lesson through a brisk, well-focused activity that helps to secure children's knowledge and sharpens their skills. |
Here are some suggestions for activities:

Some mental starters using 0 - 9 cards: (1) Arrange the cards to make a number track. Count to check that the cards are in the correct order. Match collections of objects to the digit cards, e.g. match 3 multilink cubes to the 3 digit card.Ask children to start at a number on their number track and count on or back, e.g. start at 4, count back 2. Show me the number you have landed on. (2) Arrange the cards in a 3 by 3 grid. The teacher calls out clues to cards, e.g. number 4, the number that is 2 more than 3, the number that is 63 divided by 9. Children turn over the card. The first child to have three in a row wins!

Pelmanism: This game can be useful for reinforcing knowledge of number facts or mental skills. Learners play in pairs of similar ability. They turn over two cards and if both players agree that they match then they can keep them. The role of the teacher is to check that pairs of cards have been correctly matched and probe mental strategies used.
