The Primary Assembly File

"This is the best resource for assemblies I have discovered in 25 years of teaching"  Headteacher, Cornwall

Assembly time may seem a small element of your school day compared to lessons, but it has an important role in preparing and easing your pupils into their learning routine. Creating assemblies that are topical, exciting and educational can make a real difference. However, at times it may seem impossible for you to dedicate your attention to preparing these assemblies, especially with all your other responsibilities. Primary Assembly File is a publication that will help strip down your assembly preparation to the bare minimum.

The Primary Assembly File is designed to help you deliver an educational experience of the highest quality, contributing to your pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. The assemblies focus on issues of human concern, giving you the opportunity to nurture the shared values of your school. What's more, the assembly themes are relevant to all students, whatever their family, cultural or religious backgrounds. It is an ideal resource for helping you to fulfill the statutory requirements for collective worship.

You will receive 20 printed assemblies each term. Assemblies are age appropriate for KS1 and KS2, with whole school assemblies also. Each theme contains five assemblies. The themes are taken from school and home-life. For example: inclusion; around the world; who am I? (issues of identity); learning to live with disability; celebrating the seasons; new schools; making friends; feeling different; loneliness; learning to share; tests and exams; stories from history; weird and wonderful experiences from a weird and wonderful world.

NATRE (National Association of Teachers of RE) and RE Today are working with 32 regional advisers like myself, and a National Lead ( Dave Francis) to provide three specific areas of support. These are:

  • To write case studies for the new curriculum website showing examples of curriculum development. Sue has suggested some departments that I may be able to visit to develop this work.
  • To talk with teachers through existing RE networks. I may be coming to meet some of you at network meetings and discuss the possibilities for curriculum development.
  • To help organise a regional conference for teachers of RE about the changes in Spring 2008.

For more information about the new curriculum you can visit http://curriculum.qca.org.uk

There is also an excellent tool which takes the user through a series of questions to support planning for development. There is an short video clip from Dave Francis speaking directly about RE issues in the context of the new curriculum.  You need to register (it's free) to use this site. This site will be hosting the webcasts for each subject to be held during this term (see below).

www.natre.org.uk
