Samuel Pepys Samuel Pepys, the well-known clerk, secretary and diarist lived in the local area of Brampton. His diary is world famous and so we have compiled facts about his life and how he lived it. Experiences Pepys’s diary covers many important historical events. He remained in London during the Great Plague of 1664-65, and he also saw the Great Fire of 1666. Among his friends were the well-known people of the time, including the scientist Isaac Newton, the architect Christopher Wren, and the poet John Dryden. Pepys closed his diary on the 31st May 1669; this was because he eyesight was starting to fail him. His wife died later in the same year. Whilst in prison, Pepys developed a life threatening kidney ulcer. His doctors said he had plenty of time left but should be let out of prison early. Two highwaymen attacked him in 1693. He was also arrested for being suspected as a jacobite. He refused to take William the 3rd oath and had to pay double taxes as a punishment.
