Samuel Pepys

Samuel Pepys, the well-known clerk, secretary and diarist lived in the local area of Brampton. His diary is world famous and so we have compiled facts about his life and how he lived it.

 

Marriage

Samuel Pepys married his wife Elizabeth St. Michel (1640-1669), daughter of a poor French Huguenot, when she was 14 and he was 22. Their marriage produced no children and was not particularly happy, although Pepys was proud to show off his beautiful wife. Their marriage came after a love match and together they survived early hardship, although later the diary reveals infidelities and jealousy.
