WAR MEMORIAL HALLS Conference Suggested By Lord Sandwich It is known that at this time, under your guidance, thought is being given to the Welcome Home to men and women returning from the Forces. It may be that two ideas are in mind. First, something to symbolise the act of welcome and, secondly, a more permanent expression of appreciation and commemoration. It is in relation to the second of these forms that my approach is made. In some places, the idea of erecting a Community Centre as a war memorial is finding favour. Certainly one of the greatest needs in the county is for places where concerts, plays, and recreational activities can be held and probably returning Service men and women accustomed as they have been to social life, will feel this. It is appreciated that the circumstances of places differ, and that with the fuller knowledge that you and your advisors have of your particular needs, your plans may not cause you difficulty. The Local Education Authority, however, is also interested in, and it would be a pity if for any reason it were found later that there was overlapping or even clash of efforts. It is suggested, therefore, that there would be advantage in a conference on these matters at this stage, in order that the various plans and proposals may be co-ordinated. If you would care to discuss the matter further, I should be pleased to hear from you, and to arrange for representatives of the Education Committee to confer. As this appears to be a matter of some public interest, I am sending a copy of this letter to the Press.
